Hey, did you know more than 80% of New Year resolutions fail by mid February? Fitness goals are particularly difficult because it is so hard to keep track of. I’ve made goals to work out more or become fitter and that didn’t work too well in the past. So in 2016, I decided to cut way back and made only one very basic fitness goal.
2016 fitness goal – walk more than 6,000 steps per day.
I achieved this goal and averaged about 6,600 steps per day in 2016. That’s a small step, but now I can build on it. By the way, fitness was just one of my 2016 Goals. I had many other goals and you can see how I did on my 2016 wrap up post on Retire by 40. Financial goals have always been easier for me than fitness.

Should middle age guys take supplements to help reach their fitness goals? Well, that depends on what your goals are. If you’re just trying to get a little leaner and fitter, then you probably don’t need supplements. Getting older is tough, though. I recently turned 43 and I can’t do what I used to do in my 30s. Part of it is because I haven’t worked out regularly for about 5 years. However, my endurance had really deteriorated over the last few years. It was never that great previously due to my mitochondrial disorder and now it’s really difficult to exercise. Would nutritional supplements help?

For me, the most difficult part of getting fit is eating healthier. Getting consistent exercise is difficult too, but I can do it if I put my mind to it. Once I add exercise to my weekly schedule, it isn’t that difficult to stick to it. I had a slow start in 2017 due to bad weather and school closing, but I’m on track now to exercise 4-5 days per week. Changing my diet is another matter. This is extremely difficult because I’ve been eating this way for 40 years! Eating habit is very hard to break.
