It’s February and the gym is already less crowded. I see this every year. People make New Year resolutions to get fit, but they don’t know how to sustain it. Will power alone can’t keep you going. What you really need to do is to change your habit. Here are the three things that helped me get to the gym regularly.
School started last week and I’m finally getting back to the gym. As expected, I couldn’t work out much while our kid is out of school. There were just too many things to do in the summer. I worked out occasionally, but couldn’t really get into the groove. However, it was still a good learning experience. Now, I know I should just write the summer off. I just couldn’t get a rhythm going. Next summers, I’ll just concentrate on having fun outdoor and not worry much about working out. This summer, we went swimming, camping, hiking, and walking all over town. We had a great summer break and I was active. It was good to take a break from working out anyway because my elbows were really hurting by the end of spring. I overdid it with the pull ups.
Ugh! The gym is closed. Do you ever get the feeling the universe is conspiring against you? That’s how I feel this week about getting fit. On Tuesday, I was almost done with my workout when the fire alarm sounded. I quickly grabbed my jacket and left. I know you’re supposed to get out as fast as possible, but the locker was in the open gym area and the fire exit was very close by. Also, I didn’t see any fire or smell any smoke. I figured it was a random fire drill. My workout was pretty much done so I was good to go.
Ughh… I’m sore. I took a week off from working out during spring break to spend time with my kid. It was great because I needed a break from going to the gym all the time. However, it was tough to go back to the gym after a week off. I couldn’t do as many pull ups and I was sore all over. My shoulders and back don’t feel good at all. I have been icing them and that helped. Taking a week off was great, but I probably should have done a few light exercises even when I don’t go to the gym. Ugh, last week was rough on my exercise program. My plan this year is to always exercise when my kid is off to school. If the kid is in school, then I need to go to the gym. It’s been working incredibly well since New Year, but this past week was very challenging.
